Respond to the song 'Hello in There' by John Prine

4/19/2026

She lived alone in a box of memories, the wind chimes and the birds breaking the quiet as she shuffled through her home in fuzzy slippers. The stove clicked until the gas lit, warming the steel below the kettle.

She braced herself against a chair as she lowered herself into another, sitting down at a table where photos were strewn before her. She remembered with humor how shocked she was in her late 30s when her body first started to feel old—aches here and there that she would now pay money for if only her pain could feel so mild. She rubbed the corner of her eyes, feeling crusty residue accumulate under the pads of her forefingers.

She wiped her hands on her pajama leg and picked up a photo. She was young, her husband was alive and when she went home in the evenings her house was bustling with the noise of three children. She stared at the photo until the kettle screamed.
