Trattoria 4 Leoni
Reputable in terms of food quality, Trattoria 4 Leoni did not disappoint when it came to entrees. In terms of service however, it was found wanting.
Optimally located in the Piazza della Passera in Florence, Italy, outdoor seating is a treat itself. The square provides a pleasant, private atmosphere, removed from the bustle of busier areas. Greeting staff is accommodating and friendly and though not punctual with reservations, this can be forgiven in busier hours. What was less tolerable, however, was the service received upon being seated. Significant time passed before being acknowledged by a server, and more still before getting in a drink order. |
What’s more, when asked for a recommendation, the server did not so much as offer a suggestion. While a single table cannot expect a server’s undivided attention, a certain degree of accommodation should be met: especially such a simple request as recommending a favorite dish. Table service as friendly and accommodating as the greeting would have enhanced the experience.
Though the service fell short of expectations, the food and wine did not. The Chianti Classico table wine complimented the food nicely, and was not so full bodied as to overpower the courses. The cream sauce and sweetness of the pear wrapped within the pasta made the pear ravioli a very enjoyable, light starter. The veal also did not disappoint and was cooked superbly, with a nice, tender cut. The smooth, rich cheesecake for dessert ended the meal impeccably, the berries on top a reminder of the fresh ingredients on hand.
The rest of the menu at the trattoria features a range of Tuscan dishes such as ribollita, and Florentine steak.. While somewhat pricey, the food is quality. The menu is also entirely in Italian, with no English descriptions, giving the restaurant an authentic, Tuscan feel.
Considering its great atmosphere, food, and wine, Trattoria 4 Leoni is worth at least one visit. And perhaps the service you receive can help you decide if it’s ever worth a return.
